Descrição: Kansas é uma banda de rock norte-americana dos anos 1970 especializada no estilo progressivo. Dave Hope (baixo), Phil Ehart (bateria), Robby Steinhardt (violino), Steve Walsh (teclado e vocal) e Rich Williams (guitarra) formaram a banda White Clover em sua cidade natal de Topeka, Kansas. Depois da entrada de Kerry Livgren (teclado e guitarra) o nome da banda foi mudado para Kansas.Formado inicialmente por Steve Walsh (Teclados e vocal), Robby Steinhardt (Violino), Kerry Livgren (Guitarras), Billy Greer (Baixo) e Phil Ehart (bateria) eles gravaram grandes álbuns nos anos 1970. O primeiro chama- se Kansas apenas e foi o trampolim para o êxito dos que viriam depois: Song for América, Masque, Point of Know returne Letoverture, esses dois últimos ganharam vários prêmios. A banda se destacou ao emplacar clássicos do rock progressivo como Carry on my Wayward Son, hoje, sucesso na abertura do seriado norte-americano Supernatural, Song for America e The Wall… desta época também surgiu o maior sucesso do Kansas, a balada Dust in the Wind.
Como o sucesso traz junto a discórdia, os integrantes começaram a de desentender no que resultou na saída de Robby Steinhardt e Kerry Livgren.
Os anos 1980 entraram e a banda manteve o pique, os álbuns Audio Visions e Vinyl Confessions demonstram isto, com a participação do produtor Joey Elefante como integrante oficial, a banda emplacou os hits Play the game tonight e Fight fire with fire (Drastic Measures álbum).Apesar de não seguirem mais a linha progressiva dos álbuns anteriores a banda manteve sua popularidade intacta.
Um novo período de mudanças surge na banda, segue-se uma coletânea e em 86 eles lançam novo trabalho na praça, trata-se de Power. Um álbum totalmente voltado para o Hard Rock, influência de Steve Morse que estreiava na guitarra.
O álbum traz um resultado satisfatório, colocando o Kansas de igual para igual com as bandas de hard da época. Este disco contém excelentes canções como é o caso de Silhouettes in disguise, All I Wanted e Three Pretenders…
Seguem com mais um álbum de estúdio : The spirits of Things, onde se destaca a canção The Preacher. Vale a pena frisar que desde algum tempo, Steve Walsh estava apenas como frontman ao vivo… mas apesar de muitas mudanças, o Kansas já começava a cair, álbuns ao vivo e Box sets foram lançados para tentar Equilibrar as finanças. A banda permaneceu um tempo longe da mídia, mas retornou com força total em 1995 com o álbum Freaks of Nature, Este disco mostrou um outro lado mais pesado da banda, que contava com mais um violinista : David Ragsdale.
O álbum é potente e preciso, as grandes músicas são Desperate Times Hope once again (Grande balada) e Black phantom 4…
Depois veio o disco Never be the Same junto de uma orquestra sinfônica, o que não causou impacto. Após o lançamento de vários caça níqueis (Remasterizacões, ao vivo, Coletâneas) a formação original se junta novamente e grava Somewhere to Elsewhere, onde mostram o porque de o Kansas ser tão conceituada em termos de rock progressivo.
